YOUR GUIDE TO WORKING SAFELY AND WITH THE CORRECT TOOLS!
General Safety Advice
For every manual sanding process we recommend to use eye and mouth protection, gloves and appropriate close fitting clothing. When you are going to use a sanding machine, we also advise to use ear protection.
Basics
Use a sequence of grades - always start with a coarser grade and progress through to finer grades.
For sanding furniture or blinds, you need the following products from our Flexovit Merchandising product range:
|
High Performance Sanding Sheets
(coarse, medium
and fine grits)
|
General Purpose
Sanding Sheets (medium

|
Finishing Paper Sheets

Next to that, you should add to your shopping list:
- Sanding Dust Cloth (always remember to remove dust prior to painting or varnishing)
- Paint
I: SANDING PAINTED FURNITURE OR BLINDS
Step 1: Removing Paint
Remove multiple layers of flaky and cracked paint or varnish with Flexovit 50 grit High Performance Paper Sheets. Then use 80 grit to remove surface paint and varnish imperfections and to smooth out light scathes. Be careful not to gauge the wood.
Step 2: Preparing the Surface
Use 120 grit High Performance Paper Sheets to smooth any damaged areas that may have required filling with wood putty then progress to 180 grit Finishing Paper. If hand sanding use a dual grit medium/coarse Double Angled Sanding Sponge for sanding into angles, corners or hard-to-reach places.

Step 3: Priming the Surface
After smoothing, prime the surface with a primer suitable with the paint or varnish you have chosen for the top coat. After applying the primer, let it dry then sand it smooth using the anti-clogging 240 grit Finishing Paper. This abrasive paper not onyl reduces friction and clogging but will ensure a perfect scratch-free finish prior to applying the final coat of paint or varnish.
Step 4: Painting the Surface
Follow recommended procedures from paint manufacturers for the best results.
II: SANDING BARE FURNITURE OR BLINDS
Step 1: Smoothing the Surface
Remove any surface imperfections or unevenness with 80 grit Flexovit General Purpose Paper Sheets. Progress through to 120 grit to smooth away light sanding scratches or alternatively, use a Dual Grit Sanding Sponge for sanding difficult areas. For a perfectly smooth bare wood finish, use 180 grit then 240 grit Finishing Paper - giving you a gliding sanding action which results in a very consistent, scratch-free surface.
Step 2: Preparing for Painting
For preparing the bare wood ready for priming, use the 120 grit General Purpose Paper Sheets then progress to 180 grit Finishing Paper. This will leave a uniform finish that will help the primer bond to the wood. Always remember to remove sanding dust prior to painting. After applying the primer, let it dry then sand it smooth using the anti-clogging 240 grit Finishing Paper prior to applying the final coat of paint or varnish.
Special tip: Flexovit Sanding Sponges
Designed for sanding contoured, flat and hard-to reach areas, the Double-sided Dual Grit Abrasive Sponges feature hardwearing aluminium oxide which makes them very durable and long lasting. The sponges are washable, therefore re-usable - available in standard, large and double angled.
Good luck!
