Room Painting Preparation

YOUR GUIDE TO WORKING SAFELY AND WITH THE CORRECT TOOLS!

General Safety Advice

For every manual sanding process we recommend to use eye and mouth protection, gloves and appropriate close fitting clothing. When you are going to use a sanding machine, we also advise to use ear protection.

Basics

Every paint coat is only as good as the surface below.

To prepare a room for painting, you need the following products from our Flexovit Merchandising product range:

General Purpose Sanding Rolls (medium and fine grits)

General Purpose Sanding Sheets (medium and fine grits)

Leightweight Sanding Block Kit

Next to that, you should add to your shopping list:

  • Primer or Undercoat
  • Filling Compound
  • Spattle

Step 1: Filling

Fill up cracks, depressions and nailholes. Remove excessive filling compound and flatten it with a spattle. Let  the filling compound dry as to manufacturer's instructions.

Step 2: Sanding

Sand the entire area using circular motions and appropriate pressure. The sanding block helps you to get an even surface. When sanding, you might notice that the compound filler has not filled up all holes. You then need to apply some more filler, let it dry again as to manufacturer's instructions and then sand the area again. If necessary, start with 80 grit medium paper for material removing and finish with 120 grit fine paper.

If an old paint coat has to be roughnened up before applying the next layer of paint, we recommend Flexovit Finishing Paper Grit 180 (sheets or rolls)

Important notice: Use moist cloth to remove the dust from the sanded surface before painting. Make sure the surface is completely dry before applying any primer or undercoat. Priming or undercoating should be done according to the recommendation of the paint producer.

Good luck!
